    Strategic Blogging for Startups

    30 October, 2006 (11:26) | Bit Bucket (/dev/null) | By: Scott Burkett

atdc_logo.gifThis Wednesday (Nov. 1st) I’ll be presenting at the ATDC’s monthly “brown bag lunch and learn.” The topic will be “strategic blogging for startups,” and will focus on how startup ventures can take advantage of certain trends in blogging to jumpstart their efforts. Hopefully, it will be a lively discussion, since I’m wrapping a few real-world case studies into the mix.

I always like going down to the ATDC. I love running into old friends, and making some new ones. But more importantly, I simply like being around other entrepreneurs. There is an unmistakable energy or vibe that you pick up when you are around like-minded people of any classification. It is a nice way for me, as an entrepreneur, to recharge my own batteries a bit.

If you will be attending, I look forward to seeing you there! Thanks to Cindy, Tony, and the rest of the ATDC gang for inviting me to come down and hang out for a while.

    Cheers.

The Return of the Podcast from the Pothole

    27 October, 2006 (00:16) | Bit Bucket (/dev/null) | By: Scott Burkett

podcast_image.jpgBack by unpopular demand, the award-losing “Podcast from the Pothole” will be back within the next week or two. Aside from fighting a terrible cold (oh, and launching a new startup), podcasting has taken a bit of a backseat. But the new podcast will have a different format – guests! Join me in the next week or so when I sit down with our first guest, Michael Blake of Adams Capital. We’ll chat about his book, as well as various topics around entrepreneurship.

    Cheers.

Oh, How I’ve Missed That Feeling!

weightworld.gifWhen building a new company, there is an unmistakable feeling you get when you reach the launch date. When those first users are in there, you feel like the weight of the world is off your shoulders. This is the closest that men can ever get to actually birthing a baby. On the other hand, there is the unmistakable punch in the gut that reminds you that the games are just beginning.

    Bootstrapping the Starbucks Way

    22 October, 2006 (21:23) | Entrepreneurship | By: Scott Burkett

starbucks_cups.gifBootstrapping any new startup is always full of challenges; a big one, of course, being controlling the burn rate of the venture in the face of trying to get bigger. Steve Walden, a former Prodigy exec, a good friend, and a HiddenMarket advisory board member, tells me that I “hold court” at Starbucks, since I tend to hold many back-to-back meetings there. This lead me to think about the many other entrepreneurs who do the same. So here are my tips for watching those fully vested pennies while gettin’ your Starbucks on.

Down to the Mat: Brainless Job Postings

    19 October, 2006 (10:16) | Bit Bucket (/dev/null) | By: Scott Burkett

wrestler.gifHaving been in the technology industry for nearly 20 years, I am on just about every spaminous mailing list known to mankind. Many of them are from recruiters (this is both good, and bad.) This brainless job posting arrived in my inbox the other day (see the parts I’ve highlighted in red.)

    The Numbers Dance

    3 October, 2006 (09:41) | Entrepreneurship | By: Scott Burkett

dancing.gifOne of the most useful skills as an entrepreneur is number crunching. If there is one thing about numbers that I’ve learned over the years, it is that I can make them sing whatever song I deem fit. Numbers are like rules – they are meant to be pushed.
