Why has UNIX enjoyed such a tremendous run, and what can today’s startup companies learn from it? It occured to me the other day that there are actually a lot of parallels between the success factors behind UNIX, and successfully building a new startup.

While not a complete surprise, Sun Microsystems let loose with an interesting development today. At its JavaOne conference, Sun announced that it would open-source its Java platform.
Too many people place an emphasis these days on retained knowledge. This is especially prevalent within technical fields. Computer programmers are often asked to recite arcane utterings of alphabet soup during job interviews. This isn’t important. What is important, however, is simply knowing where to find the right answers.
